We First 5: What You Need to Know This Friday

A Bright Idea for Climate Awareness
This Saturday evening marks the return of Earth Hour, WWF’s initiative to “shed light” on climate change and its effects. From the hours of 8:30 – 9:30 local, participants will power down to raise awareness for the issue, while simultaneously helping to reduce carbon emissions. As part of the program’s typically savvy social media efforts, users can apply a filter to their social profiles, as well as donate their feed to inspire others in their network to get involved.

A Big Idea for Oceans
It’s been a good year so far for Leonardo DiCaprio, he’s won an Oscar and now his foundation is spearheading an innovative effort to ease debt in the Seychelles, while also helping to preserve the island nation’s environment. It’s a great example of private enterprise and government working together to generate forward-thinking solutions.

A-List Awareness
And if you like what Leo is doing for the Seychelles, then why not follow him on Instagram? Rather than the usual parade of low-impact celebrity self-promotion, DiCaprio uses his account, and his stature, to bring attention to a wide range of environmental causes.

Where All Those Empty St. Patty’s Day Bottles Go
Who doesn’t love a good inside the factory/how it gets made video? Take a tour of a recycling plant to see how glass is reused in this short film from NPR’s Planet Money.

Someone Got the Memo
While the rest of the office was woefully lacking in St. Patrick’s Day sartorial spirit, our very own Megan McAllister made Irish eyes smile with this flowing emerald Ripley Rader number.
